On any freelance platform, clients compare many people quickly. Your profile and your proposal are often the only things they read before deciding. Both should be short, clear and about the client, not about you.

Your profile

A clear headline. Say what you do and for whom: "Arabic–English translator for legal and business documents" is better than "Translator and creative person".

A short summary. Three or four lines:

  1. What you offer.
  2. Who you have helped, or what you have done.
  3. How you work: speed, communication, revisions.
  4. What a client should send you to get started.

Real examples. Add your best three to five pieces of work. Put the most relevant one first.

Honest skills and levels. List only tools and languages you really use. A good review is worth more than a long list.

A clear photo, if the platform expects one, and the same name you use for payments.

Your proposal

A proposal is your answer to one client's request. Most weak proposals are copied and pasted. Strong ones show you read the request.

A simple structure:

  1. One line that repeats the need. "You need your 10-page company profile translated into English by Thursday."
  2. How you will do it. Two or three short points.
  3. Proof. One similar example from your portfolio, with a link if the platform allows it.
  4. Price and time. Clear, with what is included.
  5. One question. Something that shows you are thinking about the project, such as the audience or the file format.

Keep it under 150 words where you can. Clients read many.

Things to avoid

  • Starting with "Dear Sir" and a long story about yourself.
  • Promising a delivery time you cannot meet.
  • Applying to jobs far outside your skills.
  • Asking to move the conversation off the platform early; many platforms do not allow it, and it can put your account at risk.

After the first projects

  • Deliver on time, and communicate if anything changes.
  • Ask happy clients, politely, for a review.
  • Update your profile every few months with your best new work.

Platform rules, fees and features change often. Read each platform's current help pages before you rely on them.
